It's Mario Time

Jacob's latest obsession is The Super Mario Brothers. When giving him some ideas for a cake theme his eyes lit up at just the mention of Mario I on the other hand was not quite as excited. I do love the finished product though, out of all my cakes I think this one comes the closest to my original sketch. I think Mario turned out a little rough around the edges because once again I fell victim to procrastination.

I Love Boys Who Sparkle

Alexa decided she wanted a Twilight cake this year. I had a cake planned out inspired by the book covers when another idea popped in my head. This cake is inspired by a T-shirt I bought Alexa last year.

The top tier is covered in sanding sugar. Originally I was going to use sugar diamonds but unfortunately the company I was going to order them from wasn't shipping them during the summer because of the heat.

On the middle tier I hand painted Edward then painted on the silver with a mixture of silver air brush spray and luster dust. The Cullen crests are made out of gumpaste and painted with black food coloring and luster dust.

The bottom tier is covered in Fondant. For the lettering I used tapits and painted them with luster dust and hologram silver twinkle dust. The twinkle dust gives it that glitter look.

January's Wedding Cake

I made this cake for my cousin January's wedding reception. She had a luau theme and she gave me complete creative freedom-WooHoo!

This cake gave me a lot of trouble. I wanted the tiers to have a bamboo look which I was originally going to do in fondant but I decided to save some time and use cookies instead. I bought out all of the cookies from a dollar store but when I went to put them on the cake half of them were broken and couldn't be used. Both grocery stores in town only carried the shorter version. I finally found some at Walgreens. They look different then the others but still looks ok.

My other issue was with the middle tier. I decided to use the petal shaped pan. I only used the petal shape once before and had a little bit (ok-a lot) of a struggle with it but I thought it would be easier with the fondant. It was sooo NOT easier! I think I would be happy if I never had to do one again!

Nikki's Butterflies

I finished Nikki's birthday cake on Saturday. It went together very easily. No muss, no fuss, and NO drama! I'm pretty pleased with this one.

As for the UP house well..... that one had a tragic ending when some clutz tripped and dropped it. WHOOPS!! But please stay tuned because I will be making it for Dad's birthday in July.

Sneek Peek

I'm busy working on two cakes for this weekend.

The first cake is for my sister Nikki whose birthday is today. It is going to be a plain old chocolate cake because that is her favorite. Her only request was butterflies. I actually started working on the butterflies and flowers a couple of weeks ago. I have a tendency to procrastinate so this is quite shocking. Here is a sneak peek:

The other cake is for Fathers Day and is a bit trickier. I'm attempting to make the house from Disney/Pixar movie Up complete with balloons. I had some troubles finding some decent images from the movie. Most pictures show the house from a distance or from weird angles. I don't have much done on this one yet but here is a little peek:

Greetings

Hi everyone! Welcome to my Blog. I decided since I don't have enough to do (haha) I would start this little blog to chronicle my little adventures in cake decorating.

I started decorating about six years ago. My Dad found a "vintage" Strawberry Shortcake character pan at a garage sale and I decided to try it out "just for fun". Eight hours later ( In my defense I only had one bag, coupler, and tip that I had to keep washing between colors) I was hooked. Things just grew from there. I eventually moved on to fondant and 3-D cakes. I am self taught - I have never taken any classes.
